When the Black Dragon seized the Deep of Ylferdun, young Gareth braved the far Winterlands to find John Aversin, Dragonsbane - the only living man ever to slay a dragon. In return for the promise of the King to send help to the Winterlands, Aversin agreed to attempt the nearly impossible feat again.
With them, to guard them on the haunted trip south, went Jenny Waynest, a half-taught sorceress and mother of Aversin's sons.
But at the decadent Court, nothing was as expected. Rebellion threatened the land. Zyerne, a sorceress of seemingly unlimited power, held the King under an evil spell, and he refused to see them. Meantime, the dragon fed well on the knights who had challenged him.
In the end, Aversin, Jenny, and Gareth had to steal away at night to challenge Morkeleb, largest and wisest of dragons.
But that was only the beginning of the perils they must face.

I thought this book sounded okay when I picked bought it and was completely blown away. I could not put Dragonsbane down after I very quickly fell in love with the characters and world. I am often a little wary when beginning a new series because it means a new world with its own rules and its own creatures that I need to familiarize myself with. Usually it is either done very well or is a word vomit of information that can be difficult to absorb at the very beginning of a new book. This was an example of where it was done very, very well and I didn't feel overwhelmed or half afraid to keep reading. It was almost subtle, the author gave enough information that I had a pretty good understanding of what was going on but didn't know every detail right off the bat. More information was gradually fed to me while I got t know that characters and got pulled further along into the plot. The characters were very relatable and felt like people I would meet on the street while being unique. The main character, Jenny is interesting without being a Mary Sue when we first meet her. I like her well travelled and knowledgeable personality without the arrogance. My favorite part? Jenny has some faults! She's not perfect, she's not the most powerful witch in the world, she's not the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, she's a person. A realistic person who gets sucked into a plot that she doesn't start out at the center of! Her lover, John is probably the next most interesting character in my mind. He is sought out to be the hero, but I was very surprised and very pleased to meet, not a classic hero who is the greatest knight the realm has to offer, but a realistic person with his own unique characteristics, goals, and issues. He even has a few faults! He was so interesting! I might even go as far as to call him my favorite character in the book! The supporting characters were also memorable with there own unique characteristics and personalities without drawing attention away from the main characters or the story.
I am a huge dragon fan and I adored the take on the dragons in this book. At the risk of spoiling the book for fellow readers, I will only say that I was pleasantly intrigued by the different faces of the dragons within this book. It wasn't the classic depiction of 'evil dragons' but they weren't fluffy, overly humanized dragons either. They were DRAGONS, they weren't arrogant, immortal, scaled, flying humans with a superiority complex. They were otherworldly beings with different customs and views than the humans and other creatures within the world.
There were other creatures besides humans and dragons, ones that weren't human and ones that were both scary and somewhat horrifying. The creatures weren't in your face, distracting from the story and taking up too much time though, they were part of the story and the were part of the world.
I could go on about this book, but I don't want go spoil it for fellow readers. Needless to say, Dragonsbane has made it onto my favorite books shelf!

Dragonsbane (Audible Audio Edition) Barbara Hambly Derek Perkins Audible Studios Books Reviews
When I was 2 years old, my mother was ill and had to spend a year in bed. In retaliation, I taught myself to read and I've never stopped. I've been a fan of Barbara Hambly's books for about 30 years now, first in paperback and now on the . This is the first of her Winterlands series, but it stands alone if you can't find the others. John Aversin is the Dragonsbane of the title, the only currently living one. He is approached by Gareth of Magloshaldon to come to the capitol of the realm to slay a black dragon that has taken over the Deep. Accompanied by Jennie Waynest, the mother of John's children, the 3 set off across the Winterlands for the capital. Along the way, they meet up with Zyerne, the king's mistress and a mage of greater strength than Jenny and a thoroughly bad person. The story goes on with as many twists and turns as the way into the Houses of Healing in the Deep. You would think that the story was mostly about John Averson, but it is mostly the story of Jenny Waynest. Ms. Hambly describes light the way a painter would paint a picture; I have never read anyone who even comes close to her mastery of light description. Her magic has rules and her world has rules too. Everything hangs together, sewn together with beautiful descriptions of light.
This book came highly recommended by none other than Brandon Sanderson. He said it was his favorite and that made me read it. It might be fantasy, but it seemed almost realistic with its protagonist's acceptance of her limitations and status in the magic world. I must say the events took many unexpected turns and I loved that. Off to download book 2.
I first read this book shortly after it was written, almost 25 years ago. I found it in our local library. At first, I thought I had missed an earlier book due to the references to an earlier battle with a dragon. (I have since learned that on occasion, some authors chose not to start their books at the beginning of the world in question, and you need to pick up some history as you go )) This was the book that introduced my to Barbara Hambly's work, and is still my favorite single book of hers, although I think I prefer the Windrose Chronicles (The Silent Tower The Windrose Chronicles (Book One),The Silicon Mage The Windrose Chronicles (Book Two),Dog Wizard The Windrose Chronicles (Book Three), and Stranger at the Wedding)as a group over this series as a whole.
I have not found any issues in the format of this book. The cover is drab, but I'm not buying books for the cover art, and the fact that so many of Ms. Hambly's books were released in quick succession outweighs any gripes about the art. The biography of Ms. Hambly is nice to read through once, but (no offense if you're reading this, ma'am), I'm more interested in her writing than her personal life.
This was followed by Dragonshadow,Knight of the Demon Queen,Dragonstar, and the short story Princess (which is available in several formats from Barbara Humbly's website). The tone of the later books does get significantly darker than this one, however. Oddly, this is the last of the books to be available on .
Barbara Hambly tend to invest a lot of effort in characterization in her books. Dragonsbane is no exception in that regard. Her touch is easily recognizable. None of her characters are carbon copies of another by any stretch of the imagination, still, one can easily see John Aversin from this book enthusiastically discussing wild tangents with Antryg Windrose from the Windrose Chronicles, while Joanna Cameron and Jenny Waynest trade wry grins about the men.
Ms. Hambly also takes the typical "hero goes to king, offers to kill dragon for reward" chestnut and turns it on its head, lampshades that she turns it on its head with the reaction of the young man sent to find "the only living Dragonsbane" - and makes it far more realistic in the process. The hero "cheated" when fighting the first dragon, and scoffs at the idea of riding up to meet the dragon as in a tournament. The reward he wants is books and soldiers to keep his people fed and safe.
All in all, this is one of my favorite books. I've just about worn out my second copy, so was very glad to have a copy that won't wear out. If you'e read it as much as I have - you probably don' need me to tell you this. If you've never read it-enjoy.
